The first episode of Game of Thrones season 8 aired in the USA on April 14th in the evening. For the rest of the world, the premiere was in the middle of the night on April 15th.
We all expected the first episode of Game of Thrones season 8 to become a success for HBO, but this surpassed all earlier records.
Before the premiere of the new season, the final episode of Game of Thrones season 7 possessed the record of amount of viewers live on HBO in the USA. Back in the days, 16,9 million viewers watched that episode, which is the highest number in the history of HBO. But, then came Game of Thrones season 8, and so far we have only seen the first episode.
How many people watched Game of Thrones season 8 episode 1?
The first episode was watched by more than 17,5 million viewers on HBO. This is the amount of live viewers, which is the highest ever recorded in their history. But, can you imagine how many people have actually watched the episode if you include all the people watching Game of Thrones on HBO Nordic in the Scandinavian countries, on Sky Atlantic in the UK, on the local HBO channels across Europe, on the HBO Go streaming service, on their own HBO Now in the USA, on channels like Hotstar in India – and we should not forget, all the people illegally downloading the TV show from websites online? It has got to be more than 100,000 people already, and maybe it is even higher.
Will Game of Thrones follow the normal pattern?
Normally, TV shows like Game of Thrones experience a little drop in the amount of viewers throughout the season, only to explode for real and see an enormous amount of viewers for the last episode of the season? Will that happen once again, or will the number of viewers grow and grow with every single episode?
I cannot say anything else, but I will follow the situation closely.
